Stage Doors

A series of photographs of the closed stage doors of various theatres across London, taken in August 2020 when lockdown restrictions were easing, but theatres had to remain dark for the foreseeable, with the future of the industry looking uncertain.
For me, a theatre's stage door is the most communal part of the building apart from the auditorium itself, being used by all the actors, crew and staff, and are usually a hive of activity even where there isn't a show playing. Most stage doors are humbly situated round the back or the sides of the building, away from the flashy welcoming entrances to the foyers, but are the spaces that so many of us will hold memories of, be it waiting nervously for an audition or interview, arriving to a sea of flowers on an opening light, leaving for the last time after a closing night, or even excitedly waiting outside to meet someone you admire.
